Safer Bathroom in Dublin: Free In-Home Consultation

What a safer Dublin bathroom includes

Dublin homeowners who want to stay put often start with one room: the bathroom. Whether a home has a concrete slab or a raised wood floor shapes how a low-threshold shower gets built. This page covers what to plan, how permits work in Dublin and where to find local support for older adults.

The core upgrades are simple. Grab bars sit at the toilet and in the shower. A bench or fold-down seat gives you a place to sit while bathing. A handheld shower on a slide bar lets you rinse seated. A walk-in or curbless shower removes the step over a tub wall.

The 2010 ADA Standards put grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor. Those rules bind public buildings, not private homes, but they are a proven reference. Our full aging-in-place bathroom guide lays out each dimension.

Permits in Dublin

The City of Dublin’s Building & Safety Division issues building permits. Applications run through the Citizen Self-Service Portal. The city says most construction and repair work needs a permit, including electrical, plumbing and mechanical work. Moving a toilet, shifting a drain, adding a circuit or building a new shower pan all fall in that group.

The city’s page does not give a bathroom-specific checklist, so confirm your scope with the division at 925-833-6620 before you start. California Civil Code Section 1101.4 also requires non-compliant plumbing fixtures to be replaced with water-conserving ones as a condition of final permit approval on single-family alterations.

Slab floors and curbless showers

A shower with no curb needs a floor that slopes to the drain, and the California Plumbing Code calls for 1/8 to 1/2 inch of slope per foot. On a slab, that means cutting and recessing the slab at the shower, then waterproofing the whole area. Some slabs are post-tensioned. Cutting a tendon can be dangerous, so the slab type must be confirmed before any coring or saw cutting.

On a raised wood floor, the joists can be recessed with blocking or a bracket system, which may need structural review. We check which floor you have during the first visit.

Dublin Aging-in-Place Bathroom FAQ

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Dublin?

Most plumbing and electrical work needs one, according to the City of Dublin. Moving fixtures or building a new shower pan counts. Cosmetic finish work generally does not. Call the Building & Safety Division to confirm your exact scope.

Can I get a curbless shower on a Dublin slab?

Often yes. The slab at the shower is recessed so the floor can slope to the drain, then waterproofed. We first confirm whether the slab is post-tensioned.

Can grab bars go into tile?

Yes, when the wall has solid backing. We add blocking behind the tile so bars hold, and we can add backing now even if you install bars later.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

It depends on scope and permit review. A grab bar and seat upgrade is short. A full curbless conversion takes longer because of framing, waterproofing and inspections.

Are there local programs for older adults in Dublin?

The Dublin Senior Center and the Alameda County Area Agency on Aging are good starting points. Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley offers accessibility repairs in select cities for income-qualified homeowners.
