Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling in Lafayette, CA

Safer Bathroom in Lafayette: Free In-Home Consultation

What a bathroom for the long run includes

In Lafayette, two agencies touch a remodel: the City for planning and Contra Costa County for building review. This page explains the split and points to local help for older adults.

The bathroom is a good place to start planning early. Typical upgrades are blocking and grab bars, a bench, a handheld shower, a low-threshold shower and a toilet at 17 to 19 inches. The full aging-in-place bathroom guide covers the numbers.

Who permits what in Lafayette

According to the city’s building permits page, the City’s Planning Department does the zoning plan check and Contra Costa County’s Building Inspection Department handles building plan check and inspection. Planning submittals use the city’s GeoCivix portal, and county building submittals go through the county’s ePermits Center.

The page lists bathroom and other interior remodels with no increase in conditioned space among its exemptions, but not kitchens. That wording does not remove county building rules. The county’s Contra Costa County bathroom remodel requirements say a permit is required when a tub or shower enclosure is replaced. We confirm both before we start.

Shower rules to design around

The county sheet calls for pressure-balancing valves limited to 120 degrees F, a 1,024-square-inch minimum, a 30-inch circle and wall finish to 70 inches. If a curb is used, it is 2 to 9 inches above the drain. The sheet does not address curbless showers, so we document slope and waterproofing on the plans.

On sloped lots, the bathroom may sit above a crawlspace, which can make joist recessing practical. We verify that on site.

Is a bathroom remodel exempt in Lafayette?

The city’s page lists interior bathroom remodels with no added conditioned space as exempt, but replacing a tub or shower enclosure needs a county permit per county guidance. Confirm your scope first.

Can I install a curbless shower?

Often, yes. The county sheet is silent on it, so we detail slope and waterproofing and confirm with the county.
