Gas Appliances and Mountain View's Electric-Ready Rule
Mountain View does not ban gas outright in existing homes, but if your kitchen remodel installs or replaces a gas range, the 2025 Green Building Code requires electric-ready wiring so the home can switch later. Many clients choose induction instead. If the project includes an air-conditioner replacement, a heat pump or heat-pump readiness is required.
2025 Mountain View Green Building Code (permits submitted from January 1, 2026): new homes and ADUs need heat-pump space and water heating, solar, battery-ready wiring and a Level 2 charger of at least 40 amps. In existing homes, installing or replacing a gas appliance requires electric-ready wiring, and replacing an air conditioner requires a heat pump or making the home heat-pump ready.
