Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling in Alamo, CA

Safer Bathroom in Alamo: Free In-Home Consultation

Why the county matters in Alamo

Alamo is unincorporated, so there is no city hall to issue your permit. Contra Costa County does. This page explains that path, what the county asks for in a bathroom remodel and where Alamo residents can find senior help.

Alamo has a Municipal Advisory Council that advises the Board of Supervisors on county services, and code enforcement is handled by the county. Building permits follow the same pattern: they go through Contra Costa County, not a town.

For the design side, our full aging-in-place bathroom guide covers grab bars, benches and curbless showers.

County permit steps for bathrooms

The county’s Contra Costa County bathroom remodel requirements say a permit is required when a tub or shower enclosure is replaced. Apply online through the county ePermits Center, where contractors link a CSLB license. If fixtures move or the room size changes, submit a floor plan that shows existing and proposed layouts. An HOA approval letter is needed if applicable. The Building Inspection Division is at 925-655-2700.

  • Shower valves must be pressure-balancing and limited to 120 degrees F.
  • New or reconfigured showers need at least 1,024 square inches and a 30-inch circle.
  • Walls around the shower need a non-absorbent finish up to 70 inches.
  • All receptacles must be GFCI-protected, and remodels need a 50 CFM exhaust fan.

Water-saving upgrades and curbless notes

A permitted remodel requires non-compliant fixtures throughout the home to be replaced, with toilets at 1.28 gallons per flush, showerheads at 1.8 gpm and bathroom faucets at 1.2 gpm. Plan for that at the start.

The county sheet gives curb dimensions if you keep one but does not address curbless showers. We therefore show the floor slope, drain and waterproofing details on the plans and confirm them with the county.

Resources for Alamo older adults

Contra Costa’s Information & Assistance line, 925-229-8434, connects seniors and caregivers to services through the Area Agency on Aging. The Danville Senior Center is nearby, and the town says Alamo residents are eligible to register for Town-sponsored programs.

The county’s Neighborhood Preservation Program lists accessibility improvements for income-qualified owners. Single-family homeowners were on a waitlist at last check, so call 510-803-3388.
