Safer Bathroom in Danville: Free In-Home Consultation

A safer bathroom in a Danville home

Danville’s housing is mostly single-family, and many owners want to age where they are. This page covers the town’s two permit paths for bathrooms, shower design and the Danville Senior Center.

According to the town’s housing element, about 76 percent of Danville homes were single-family detached in 2020, and about 18 percent of residents were 65 or older in 2019. For these households, a bathroom plan often means a bench, grab bars with proper backing, a handheld shower and a door wide enough for a walker. See our full aging-in-place bathroom guide.

Danville's permit paths

The Town of Danville says permits are required for bathroom and kitchen remodels and for plumbing, electrical or mechanical work. Apply through the Online Permit Center (Citizen Access). The permit desk is 925-314-3330.

The town also has a Like-for-Like policy. It covers replacing fixtures with the same kind, brought up to current code. It does not cover adding walls, or adding or moving fixtures or outlets. Plans are still required.

Adding a seat location or moving a shower valve would likely fall outside like-for-like, so we confirm the path with the Building Division first.

Designing the shower

A curbless entry changes the plumbing, so it sits in the standard remodel path rather than like-for-like. The floor slopes to the drain, the membrane runs through the whole shower area and the pan is tested before tile. We set the bench at 17 to 19 inches, the bars at 33 to 36 inches, and the valve within reach of the seat.

Tempered glass is required on enclosures where glass sits less than 60 inches above the standing surface, or you can choose a glass-free layout.

Danville Aging-in-Place Bathroom FAQ

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Danville?

Yes. The town lists bathroom and kitchen remodels, plus plumbing and electrical work, as permit work.

What is a like-for-like remodel in Danville?

It means replacing fixtures with the same kind, brought to code, without moving walls, fixtures or outlets. Plans are still required.

Can I turn a tub into a curbless shower under like-for-like?

Probably not, since it changes the layout. The town sends projects that change layout through the standard remodel requirements.

Can grab bars be anchored in tile?

Yes, into solid backing. We add blocking or plywood behind the wall so the bar holds firm.

Is there local help for older adults in Danville?

The Danville Senior Center is the local hub, and Contra Costa’s Information & Assistance line, 925-229-8434, handles referrals.
