Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling in Livermore, CA

Safer Bathroom in Livermore: Free In-Home Consultation

Start with the fall points

Livermore homes range widely in age, so bathroom plans differ house to house. This page covers the safety basics, how permits start in Livermore and the senior services available through the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District.

Wet floors, a high tub wall and a low toilet are the usual trouble spots. Fixes include grab bars anchored to solid backing, a slip-resistant shower floor, a bench, a handheld shower and a toilet seat at 17 to 19 inches. We explain each in the full aging-in-place bathroom guide.

Lighting counts too. A night light on the path from bed to bathroom is on the CDC’s home safety checklist.

Permits in Livermore

The City of Livermore’s Permit Center handles building permits. Its online permitting page uses an Accela Citizen Access account and lists plumbing, electrical and water heater permits among those you can apply for online. The page does not spell out a bathroom checklist, so call the Permit Center at 925-960-4410 to confirm what your scope needs.

As a rule, relocating a drain, adding a circuit or building a new shower pan involves permitted trades. Replacing non-compliant plumbing fixtures with water-conserving ones is also a state condition of final approval on single-family alterations under Civil Code Section 1101.4.

Floors and framing

A curbless shower needs the floor to drop toward the drain. In a home with a raised floor, we look at joist depth and direction under the shower. In a slab home, we confirm the slab type first. Either way, the shower area is waterproofed as one unit, and the California Plumbing Code treats a shower without a threshold as a wet location for the floor space in that room.

If the framing is older or has seen water damage, we repair it before tile goes in.

Livermore Aging-in-Place Bathroom FAQ

Do I need a permit to add grab bars in Livermore?

Installing grab bars alone is usually simple, but backing in walls or any plumbing or electrical change can bring in permits. Call the Livermore Permit Center at 925-960-4410 to confirm.

Is there an online permit process in Livermore?

Yes. The city’s page lists plumbing, electrical and water heater permits among those available through its online portal.

Can a curbless shower work in an older Livermore home?

Often, yes. It depends on whether the floor is a slab or raised wood framing and what is below. We check on site.

Where do Livermore seniors get information?

The LARPD Senior Services Center at 4444 East Avenue gives information and referrals. Call 925-373-5760.

How do I choose between a bench and a fold-down seat?

It depends on space and who uses the shower. A fixed bench is steadier. A fold-down seat saves room. An occupational therapist can help you decide.
