Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling in Campbell

Safer Bathroom in Campbell: Free In-Home Consultation

Bathroom upgrades that help you stay put

Campbell requires bathroom permit applications to be submitted electronically, and the city runs an Adult Center for people 50 and older. Both are useful if you are planning a safer bathroom.

Think about how you use the room each day. Do you step over a tub edge? Push up from a low toilet? Reach across a wet floor for the faucet? Each answer points to a fix: a walk-in shower, a comfort-height toilet, a bar or a lever handle. The full aging-in-place bathroom guide covers the standard options.

A compact bathroom with little turning room can still gain safety from a swing-out door, a pocket door, a bench and well-placed bars.

Campbell's online permit process

The Building Inspection Division of Campbell’s Community Development Department issues residential remodel permits. Its Single Family Residential Remodel Application Guide lists bathrooms under interior remodels and says all building permit applications must be submitted electronically through the MyGovernmentOnline (MGO) system. You create a user account first.

What the guide asks for on a bathroom job:

  • A floor plan of just the affected rooms, showing fixtures such as sinks, tubs and toilets.
  • Plumbing plans listing fixture locations and dimensions.
  • Title 24 energy forms and report, plus a title sheet and mechanical, plumbing and electrical plans.
  • For condos and townhomes, an HOA letter on letterhead that names the contractor and authorizes the work.

Plans are also reviewed by Planning, Land Development Engineering and the Santa Clara County Fire District. For questions, call the Building Inspection Division at 408-866-2130.

What we check in a Campbell home

We confirm whether the floor is wood framing over a crawl space or a slab, because that decides how a curbless shower is built. With wood framing, we look at joist direction and spacing before cutting. The subfloor can be recessed between joists using sistered framing or a manufactured bracket system, with a waterproof membrane over the top.

We also look for old galvanized supply lines and worn drain lines. If walls are open anyway for blocking, it is a good time to decide on replacement.
