Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling in Santa Clara

Safer Bathroom in Santa Clara: Free In-Home Consultation

What a safe bathroom adds

Santa Clara homeowners planning a safer bathroom deal with the city’s own Permit Center and its Senior Center on Fremont Street. Here is the permit path and the local help available.

Safety shows up in small details: bars you can trust, a seat that is the right height, a floor with grip, and light on the route from bed. Our full aging-in-place bathroom guide lists the standard heights and why they matter.

The ADA Standards give a reference for these. For example, a toilet seat 17 to 19 inches high and shower seats at the same height. In a private home they are guidance, not law. Pick what fits the person using the room.

Getting a permit in Santa Clara

The City’s building permit information page says a building permit must be obtained before you alter, repair or improve a building, and that plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits can be issued with it. Applications go through the city’s Permitting Online Portal, managed by the Community Development Department’s Permit Center at 1500 Warburton Avenue.

The city’s Simple Permits option covers only like-for-like HVAC, solar, re-roof, sewer or water work and water heater projects. Bathroom remodels are not on that list. The page says to apply for a Building Regular Permit if unsure. The Permit Center can be reached at 408-615-2420 or pe**********@**********ca.gov.

Housing and what we check first

We do not assume a floor type. A quick look at the crawl space or slab, the drain location and the framing tells us what a curbless entry will take. On raised floors, the shower area can be recessed between joists. On slabs, we plan the drain and slope in the concrete, and confirm the slab is not post-tensioned before any cutting.

Condos and townhomes add another layer. The city’s Simple Permits are not available for them, and your HOA may have its own approval rules.
