Updating San Ramon's 1980s and '90s Bathrooms

About three-quarters of San Ramon’s homes were built after 1980, and the City describes its housing as being in excellent condition. That means most bathroom projects here are about style and function rather than repair: replacing builder-grade tubs with walk-in showers, adding double vanities, upgrading lighting and finishes, and making primary suites feel like a retreat.

Planning Comes First in San Ramon

San Ramon’s permit FAQ is direct: any addition and remodeling first requires approval by the Planning Services Division. For an interior bathroom, that is a quick check. Then the Building & Safety Division reviews and issues the permit, and City inspectors do the field inspections.

HOA and Fire District Notes

  • Many San Ramon neighborhoods have homeowners associations with their own architectural rules; we include HOA review in the schedule where it applies.
  • If your home has fire sprinklers, any modification needs a fire district submittal.
  • Inspectors check GFCI circuits, exhaust fans, safety glazing, water-conserving fixtures and smoke and CO alarms.
